City of Palmdale
Palmdale
displays the image of a vibrant city full of growth and economic
stability. Throughout the past two decades, Palmdale has proven to
be a vastly growing community having been ranked as the fourth
fastest-growing city in the nation during the period from 1990-1996.
With Palmdale's growth in population, it has proven to be a city of
opportunity as well as an affordable community full of industrial
growth. During the 1990s, the city of Palmdale enjoyed a
tremendous amount of growth and change. In an effort to enhance the
quality of life for the community, the city has worked to transform
the look of downtown with the completion of the Palmdale Youth
Library and Poncitlan Square – the award-winning greenbelt along
Sierra Highway and the Sierra Bike Trail.
A new civic center will also
be a centerpiece to the city, including a 30,820-square-foot city
hall to include the public works, planning, building and safety, and
economic development departments. Nearby, the new Palmdale
Courthouse will include four courtrooms, a civil court clerk's
office and a multipurpose room to serve primarily as a jury assembly
room. The Palmdale Cultural Center, a gathering place for the the
community for more than 17 years, is also scheduled for renovation.
Other gathering places are the
Antelope Valley Mall and its surrounding restaurants and the
Palmdale Playhouse.
The city has assisted in the
development of the Rancho Vista Golf Course, and is working with
Universal Health Services (the company which owns
Lancaster Community Hospital) to bring a full-service hospital
to Palmdale. Over the last decade, the city has spent more than $20
million on park development, including the Pelona Vista Park which
includes a 73-acre multiuse sports complex with up to 15
soccer fields located off the Antelope Valley Freeway. The site also
includes a 445-space parking facility which will also serve as a
city park-and-ride lot. Other amenities will include the 132-acre
A.C. Warnack Nature Park, the 3.2-mile Joshua Ranch Trail and the
Plant 42 Heritage Airpark, a 26-acre park celebrating the rich
aerospace heritage of Palmdale. The airpark will include a
collection of aircraft built, flown or modified at Air Force Plant
42.
The city is also working with
the Los Angeles World Airports staff to establish a viable
Palmdale Regional Airport
at the Air Force Plant 42 site. The airport could grow to provide
the same level of service as the Ontario (Calif.) Airport by the
year 2020.
